With Individual Desire
German playwright Heiner Müller said, “The only thing a work of art can do is awaken a longing for a different state of being. And this longing is revolutionary.” Theatre, that mysterious and charged space between “you” and “I,” is the site of my revolution.
The best ways to encounter my playwriting is to see my work or stage my work. The texts I construct are maps with which to build and navigate theatrical worlds. Language alone does not encompass the entirety of the theatrical form--not even close--so for me, being a playwright means composing a series of problems and questions and putting them into space through bodies, images and sounds (sometimes with a love story, but not one that usually ends well). If reading my plays is your only option, the best way to read my plays, or any play, is out loud with people who share a common desire to meet that play. When we meet plays out loud, with our bodies and voices in time and space, we remember theatre is a collective game of make believe we choose to play with each other. We remember that in any given moment many lives, selves, and worlds are possible. We remember our lives are a series of stories we are telling.

Always Still the Dawn
My writing is supported by The National Arts Centre, The Banff Centre for the Arts, The Canada Council for the Arts, and the Toronto and Ontario Arts Councils. It has also won some won awards (which is always a nice surprise).
